Umayyad Mosque

The oldest mosque in Damascus and one of the most important symbols of Islamic architecture, it was built by Caliph Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik in the 8th century AD. It is distinguished by its historic minarets and unique golden mosaics, and it houses a shrine to the Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist).
